“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” ~ Wayne Dyer

Everyday you are faced with challenges, decisions and situations that can cause stress in your life. The ability to step back and look at the bigger picture is an essential skill for creating a happy and carefree life. By transforming the way you look at situations that upset, challenge or frustrate you, being able to handle them more calmly and with confidence alleviates the stress.

Perceptions are influenced by experience, values, judgments, information (or lack thereof), and your needs and desires. Yet, it is entirely possible to expand your perception of situations, events and behaviors by looking at the bigger picture. Changing your perspective is really simple, but not necessarily easy.

Carrying a negative point of view saps your energy, weighing you down both mentally and spiritually. Just imagine how you could use that energy in other ways! If holding a particular perspective is causing you pain, distress, or anxiety, something is clearly amiss in how you are viewing the situation – or viewing yourself in relation to the situation.

It’s been said that pain is inevitable; suffering is optional. While no one comes here to continually experience pain and suffering, stress is a natural part of life. By accepting that there will always be change in your life, you can free yourself to experience it in all its many facets. This is not an easy task, but worth the effort to create more happiness in your life.

Think of a time in your life when you were stressed over something such as criticism at work or the loss of a friendship. What usually happens to make the suffering lessen and eventually end is that over the course of time you come to a different view (perspective) of the situation. Maybe you realize that there was truth in the criticism you received and you were able to use it to make a positive change. Or you saw that the friendship you lost had not been at the level you wanted or needed, and were able to accept it and move on. The cliché that time heals all wounds is a statement about how perspectives change over time. However, it is possible to consciously accelerate this process.

The concept of shifting perspectives is a tool that will give you a bigger picture of most situations you encounter and, with practice, expand the way you perceive the world. You’ll naturally become calmer and more relaxed when your perspectives shift to a more positive viewpoint.

Imagine that you are standing at the top of a tall mountain looking at the blue sky above, snow on the distant peaks, and a valley far below where everything looks tiny. Now shift your view to standing in the valley below looking around at the lush greenery and then up at the mountain. This is quite a different view from the one at the top of the mountain. You may see some of the same sights – the snow and the blue sky – but your perspective of those things are very different.

The trick to shifting your perspective is the same as being able to move between the valley floor and the mountaintop without walking or driving there.

When you look for an alternative perspective, you take control and use the power of your own mind to change your situation. When you change your perspective, you are actually training your mind to find the good in every situation. In turn, your life becomes less stressful and happier because as you train yourself to focus on the good, you will see the good in everything. Life becomes more carefree as you begin to see everything from a positive viewpoint instead of a negative one. This is how you transform your world.
